External tools such as the Building Architect Tool (BAT) allow custom third-party buildings and content to be added to the gameplay. SimCity 4 introduces night and day cycles and other special effects for the first time in the SimCity series. For the success of a city, players must manage its finances, environment, and quality of life for its residents. Players can zone different areas of land as commercial, industrial, or residential development, as well as build and maintain public services, transport and utilities. The game allows players to create a region of land by terraforming, and then to design and build a settlement which can grow into a city. ![]() SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition contained the original game and Rush Hour combined as a single product. SimCity 4 has a single expansion pack called Rush Hour which adds features to the game. It is the fourth major installment in the SimCity series. SimCity 4 is a city-building simulation computer game developed by Maxis, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts. ![]() ![]() On a large TV the graphics do appear somewhat blocky, with the exception of Metal Slug 6 (which is the most recent instalment and runs on Sammy’s Atmoswave arcade hardware - the backgrounds are higher resolution, but the sprites themselves are slightly blurred). Each level is literally bursting with character and players will often find themselves pausing from the onslaught in order to fully realize the numerous inconsequential animations and details. All are graphically stunning – so long as you appreciate intricate 2D illustration. The games included here are unquestionably excellent. To touch upon the many innovative and original features spread across the decade-long history of Metal Slug would require more time and space than this reviewer is inclined to take up, so let’s move on. Throughout the seven games additional transport becomes available – ranging from the sublime (a cool yet characteristically dumpy jet fighter) to the ridiculous (a gun-wielding camel). The ‘Metal Slug’ of the title is a diminutive tank that appears at set points in each level and grants protection and increased offensive capabilities for a short while. Your default firearm is a weedy little handgun but throughout the course of the series you pickup improved weapons like machineguns, flamethrowers, rocket launchers and shotguns (albeit with limited amounts of ammunition). Along the way you can liberate prisoners, which not only counts towards your rating at the end of the stage but also gives additional weapons and ammo. You are tasked with simply moving from the beginning of each level to the end, indiscriminately mowing down hordes of enemies and occasionally tackling a monstrously huge end of level boss. The series has never been about complex plots or intricate control systems – it’s more an exercise in instinctive action and visual gratification. Even with the additions, it didn't so much change the formula as hone it to a razor's edge of perfection that is still beloved by fans today. To those of you that haven’t experienced the Slug lineage before - kindly emerge from underneath your rocks and listen to this handy summary. There are only five levels on offer in Metal Slug 3, but with the branching pathways included, this is still the longest entry in the series on consoles. There's even a jetpack which, should you be blasted out of the flying Slug, lets you get safely back to terra firma while launching missiles. Multiple new Slugs were added for this game, some of which coincide with the new level environments, namely underwater and outer space. Each path leads to the same final boss battle but varies in length, difficulty, and resources found in the form of prisoners and powerups encountered along the way. This is the first time players could take branching pathways through the game, with the opening four missions offering at least two paths each. The third entry is widely regarded as the series' pinnacle, continuing the same intense run-and-gun action while adding several improvements. With that said, it seemed appropriate to refresh this list and equip it with even more notable titles in the series. Little is known about this anticipated release, but what is known is the timeless draw of this feverishly addictive sidescrolling shooter. Though SNK has thus far mostly stuck with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra regarding the series' formula, Leikir Studio and Dotemu look to venture into new territory with a roguelike RPG twist on the franchise, Metal Slug Tactics. It's hard not to be drawn in by the delightfully old-school pixel art and the frantic run-and-gun insanity. Updated Jby Stephen LaGioia: Despite its crude retro style - and perhaps even because of it - the Metal Slug series has maintained a certain charm and appeal even after over two decades. With 13 mainline titles in the series, the progression is fascinating to track from simple 2D side-scrolling shooter all the way to its only 3D entry.
